Nokia has long used Symbian as its sole platform for smartphones. Recently the company has started to use a new platform for its high-end smartphones, but has vowed to not abandon Symbian as its core offering.
Research firm Juniper Research has released the results of a study that claims shipments of Handsets running Symbian are set to soar over the next few years. The study predicts that by 2014 there will be 180 million Symbian handsets shipped each year.
The findings suggest that the smartphone market is moving towards open source operating systems. This is despite the fact that some of the most popular devices on the market run proprietary OS’ including the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices.
