Low-cost handsets to be over half of all mobiles by 2014

With the bad economy right now, the mobile phone world is a bit upside down. Typically, the low cost handsets are where the brunt of the business is located. In the current economy, sales of high-end smartphones are where the money is.

Research firm Juniper Research has released a new report that claims by 2014 low-cost handset will account for half of all mobile phones. The market is becoming polarized between low cost handsets in emerging markets and high-end smartphones in developed markets.

The Indian Sub Continent region will account for 22% of all low-end phone sales by 2014 according to the report. By 2014 low-cost handsets and smartphones will together account for 79% of all new mobile phone sales.
