Motorola Motonav TN30 review: Likeable, with limits

I had an opportunity to test the TN30 on a cross-country road trip from Atlanta to San Francisco and learned that all that glitters ain't gold, especially with first-generation gadgets. One day into the trip, I noticed that the device was noticeably less responsive than at unboxing. By day two, the menus were rendering incorrectly and the Bluetooth ceased to function, forcing a hard reset to restore full functionality. By the end of day three, the problems were back, prompting another res...

Pharos Introduces Two New GPS Smartphones

While they're mostly a maker of standalone GPS devices, Pharos has had a line of smartphones for a while. We reviewed their GPS Phone 600 last year and found it to be a slightly uneasy compromise between Windows Mobile Pocket PC and GPS, though it definitely had its strengths. This year's models are the Traveler 117 and 127. Both models are unlocked GSM/EDGE/HSDPA phones that run on T-Mobile's EDGE network or AT&T's 3G HSDPA network. They run Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with 40...

Telenav, known for the mapping software it sells to cell-phone companies, has entered the standalone GPS market Monday with the Shotgun, a $299 GPS with real-time traffic detection and a connected search feature for places of interest. Real-time traffic detection was a noted feature of the recently-discontinued Dash device, which used the network of Dash devices to track traffic and plot the best routes to avoid it. Interestingly, Dash now says the company plans to be a service provider, esse...

Dash Navigation to Stop Making Hardware. Cuts 65% of Workforce. Will focus on Selling Software

Dash Navigation today announced that it will no longer sell GPS hardware devices. Instead, the company says it will refocus its business on licensing its software to other companies. I guess I'm shocked but not surprised; Dash's innovative Express GPS navigator had, by far, the best traffic awareness of any GPS I've tested to date. But there's just no denying the fact that Dash's big, fugly hardware wasn't going to sit well with picky consumers accustomed to thin, pretty devices. Dash's har...
