BlackJack III reportedly called Samsung Epix, hitting AT&T soon

October 4, 2008

Samsung’s i780 smartphone (pictured above) will be rebadged as the Samsung Epix when it’s released by AT&T, according to leaked documentation obtained by The Boy Genius Report, and not the BlackJack III, as previously thought. The authentic-looking image describes an AT&T sales representative training event for the 3G handset on October 23rd, making a fourth quarter release seem quite likely. With a 320 x 320 pixel screen (up from QVGA), GPS, and Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, the spiritual sucessor to the BlackJack II is decently equipped, although it certainly doesn’t rival such flagship models as the high-resolution HTC Touch Pro or Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. According to the Boy Genius, a price point of around $200 is expected, after the rebate associated with signing a contract.

Revised PocketSurfer2 gets unlimited lifetime surfing in UK, old one gets cheaper here

October 3, 2008

DataWind’s PocketSurfer2 hasn’t exactly made a huge impact here in the US, where it was unceremoniously re-dubbed the PC Edge prior to being released to the back cabinets of electronics retailers next to piles of unwanted Shifts. It’s seen more success in Europe, where surfers on the go can now buy a nicely upgraded model, the PocketSurfer2R. It shares the prior device’s basic layout and 640 x 240 screen, but contains a GPS receiver inside and a small touchpad to the upper-right of the keypad. More notable, though, is the new “Immortality Plan,” which won’t guarantee that you’ll still be rocking out when your grandkids retire, but, for a one-time fee of £60 (a little over $100), offers unlimited surfing over the lifetime of the device. Given we’re stuck paying $25/month here, we’d call that a bargain. This new model won’t be coming stateside, at least not yet, but the older one has received a $100 price drop to $199. Via Engadget

Samsung INNOV8 Review at phonearena!

October 3, 2008

The large dimensions of the phone allow for many buttons to be employed in its design without having absurdly miniature size. The navigational keys are very good and are easily pressed with good tactile feedback. The silvery buttons are slightly protruding over the black ones and with some ?getting used to? time you?ll be able to operate both types at the same time without pressing the wrong one. We are still wondering how come the d-pad and the silvery keys are not back lit, but as we mentioned before, you?ll be able to use them trouble free even in the even in the dark. ” Read more here:

Windows Mobile Internet Explorer 6 photos - Full HTML browsing on Win Mobile 6.1

October 3, 2008

The next, officially announced, big update for Windows Mobile will be - as Microsoft calls it - “6 on 6″, which is Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on Windows Mobile 6.1. The current Internet Explorer Mobile code, as it is used for today’s Windows Mobile devices and smartphones, is based on the pretty much outdated Internet Explorer 4.x, which was initially released back in September, 1997! The time of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4, when the World Wide Web was pretty young. So no question, it is time for an update! And while some called 6 on 6 vaporware already, even if Microsoft’s Andy Lees confirmed its upcoming release in our earlier interview, you can see bellow that it exists indeed as the the screenshots we recently received proves.” More photos here:

SanDisk Announces 16GB microSDHC

October 3, 2008

SanDisk Corporation, a global leader in flash memory products, today announced it is bringing to market its 16GB microSDHC and Memory Stick Micro (M2) mobile memory cards - the world?s largest removable storage capacity for mobile phones. Best Buy Mobile and Verizon Wireless stores are the first major retail outlets in the United States to carry the 16GB capacity. The fingernail-sized 16GB memory cards allow consumers to ?wake up? the many storage-intensive features offered by today?s portable handsets such as music and video playback, high-definition digital camera functions, gaming and GPS applications.  In addition to the mobile phone, consumers can use the 16GB microSDHC card in a multitude of other devices, including video cameras, GPS receivers or MP3 players with a microSD slots such as SanDisk?s Sansa players.”Handsets have become far more than just phones - they?ve become mobile jukeboxes, mobile offices, even mobile movie theaters,” said Avi Greengart, Research Director for Mobile Devices at Current Analysis. “Flash memory cards have increased in storage capacity, but even an 8GB card may be too small for anyone with GPS map data, a few movies, a game or two, a presentation file and other applications. There is an acute need for more mobile storage capacity. 16GB gives consumers the ability to carry their digital content with them and still have room to do more with their mobile phones.”
SanDisk?s 16GB microSDHC card has an MSRP of $99.99 and the 16GB M2 card has an MSRP of $129.99. The new 16GB capacity will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November ? the only major retailers in the United States to carry this mobile storage capacity in 2008.MicroSD cards are designed for slot-equipped legacy mobile phones and can hold a maximum capacity of 2GB. Today?s microSDHC cards are available in 4GB, 8GB and now 16GB, are ideal for newer mobile phone models, most of which are compatible with these higher capacity cards. The Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards are designed for Sony Ericsson?s new generation of mobile phones, all of which are compatible with the 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacity levels. SanDisk?s 16GB mobile memory cards come with a five-year limited warranty.

Eten X610 Review atphonearena!

September 29, 2008

The display is 2.8? QVGA and is capable of reproducing 65,536 colors. The picture has good contrast and saturation, but the screen?s performance suffers when exposed to direct sunlight and becomes difficult to read. Above it are located two discrete service lights, which are almost unnoticeable unless they are blinking. In contrast to the X600, the new Eten has gotten rid of a full row of keys from its face. The remaining ones are the accept/reject call keys, GPS and one providing access to the QuickBar shortcuts menu. The keys provide a very good tactile feedback, but being completely leveled with the front panel makes them hard to find only by touch. Another change is the way the device is navigated; the joystick found on its predecessor is replaced by a 5-way D-pad, which is a bit on the small side, but feels good under your finger and is comfortable to use.” Read more here:
