Apple Eyes Pre iTunes Sync Wearily

One of the big features of the Palm Pre that got many smartphone fans excited about the device was that it could sync with iTunes. I was rather surprised when Palm talked that feature up, I didn’t figure Apple would appreciate it synchronizing with iTunes.

Apple stayed quiet about the feature, until now. Apple has issued a support entry that specifically targets the Pre. The entry talks about unsupported third-party digital media players and says that future versions of iTunes may not support third-party synchronization.

Reports I have seen claim that the Pre identifies itself as a generic iPod to iTunes to be able to sync so Apple would have to do some work to block the Pre. The entry form Apple is below:

“Apple is aware that some third parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.”
