Samsung Snubs Qualcomm, Builds 4G Chips

Samsung Electronics is making its own WiMAX and LTE baseband chips for wireless handsets, according to an article in EETimes. The move by the Korean electronics maker shows how much opportunity it sees as the wireless industry transitions to 4G, and the fortunes of the biggest wireless chipmakers shift. Samsung has built its own application processors (one is inside the iPhone), and has extensive memory chipmaking operations, including a fabrication plant in Austin. It also is one of the top han...

AT&T Sells Refurbished Apple iPhone 3G for $99

AT&T today began offering refurbished iPhone 3Gs for $99 for a black 8GB and $199 for a black 16GB model. For several weeks before Christmas, Apple blogs were buzzing with rumors that Wal-Mart would be selling a new version of Apple's iPhone at $99. But instead, Wal-Mart confirmed it would carry new iPhone 3Gs starting Sunday at $197, not $99. AT&T's $99 refurbished iPhones are the same models, but slightly used. The heavily discounted iPhones still require a two-year AT&T cont...

Overclocking guide shows what Intel’s Core i7 is / isn’t capable of

With the introduction of the new Intel Core i7 processor architecture, the company affectionately known as "Chipzilla" from Santa Clara has once again topped itself on the performance charts. Core i7 chips deliver significantly better performance per clock cycle, while at the same time being more power-efficient versus its predecessors. There's no doubt that it's a great chip, an insanely complex piece of circuitry which can churn through whatever you throw at it with relative ease. It is the ch...

BenQ’s Joybook Lite U101 delivers smileys on the lid, frownies on the keyboard

We hope you've forgiven us for being somewhat less than enthused when we got word of BenQ's Joybook Lite U101 being launched, as at the time we didn't quite see the need for another "me too" netbook. After reading Laptop Magazine's first impressions we're still not quite getting the point. While this little lappy is something of a looker, with a lid festooned with cute emoticons, on the other side of that lid is a glossy, 10.2-inch LCD that sheds 24 vertical pixels just for the sake of being 16:...

BlackBerry Storm 4.7.0.85 firmware gets leaked

Since the launch of RIM’s new flagship phone, the BlackBerry Storm there have been a number of updates trying to fix what honestly feels like a handset that was rushed to market. Someone over at CrackBerry forums got a hold of the newest leaked firmware. This firmware is suppose to have some bug fixes (as usual), the accelerometer action has been sped up and feels a great deal more responsive. Typing on the touchscreen also is suppose to be a bit more responsive. The update seems to be a ...

Qik Adds Support for 27 New Devices

Qik has revealed their new beta client with support for 27 additional phones. When Qik makes an announcement they really pour it on thick. Perhaps the biggest news with this release is the support for the Palm OS and devices such as the 800w and Treo Pro. Qik has also added the ability to utilize external flash memory for larger upload buffers. There is also enhanced support for the growing market of touchscreen handsets. It looks like Qik is trying hard to compete with other video streaming ser...
