Palm to Add Voice Dialing Over Bluetooth for Treo 800w Soon
July 29, 2008
“As seen in the PIC’s review and amidst much online discussion of Palm’s new Treo 800w, one of the device’s major shortcomings is about to be quickly addressed Palm. According to this post on Palm’s 800w support page:
“Treo 800w Voice Dialing Over Bluetooth will be available soon as a download from this web page. Please return to this page in the coming days for the download and details.”
No additional details such as whether or not the update will be RAM or ROM-resident are offered, no is an exact release date given.
With the new 800w being the first Palm device to entirely forego any sort of standard wired headset or headphone connectivity, the lack of voice commands over a Bluetooth connection out of the box comes as a disappointment to users long accustomed to this feature on older, less-pricey mobile phones. Additionally, the 800w’s audio-out functionality is handled entirely via Bluetooth A2DP or via an optional microUSB-to-3.5mm stereo headphone adapter, so one would imagine Palm would have exercised caution to ensure all Bluetooth functionality was enabled at launch on this device. The 800w’s tandem of relatively advanced hardware and the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS are fully compliant for all Bluetooth protocols and functionality, unlike Palm’s smartphones based on their aging Garnet OS. So the lack of native voice dialing capability is a major and disappointing omission in what is Palm’s newest smartphone release and flagship device. The Treo 800w had its debut on Sprint earlier this month and is rumored to be heading to the Verizon network sometime in the next 3-6 months. ” via palminfocenter.com

Adobe has launched version 2 of its Lightroom raw processing and workflow tool. The result of feedback from professionals and a public bate process, version 2 of the software follows the basic structure of its predecessor but with a variety of tweaks and additions. Nokia E71 review: Messenger of steel
July 26, 2008

“Following some time off since the E51, the Nokia E-series is back to the shop with a new pet for business-minded users. Nokia E71 seems to have it all to take over and build on the E61 QWERTY messengers’ expertise. The suave upgrade is much slimmer now (and thus much more pocket-friendly), more powerful and a whole lot more skilled. The smaller display is actually the only step down. Well, we’re back in business too, and we’re about to see if that’s the step back before a major leap forward.
The Nokia E71 is among the best-equipped Nokia smartphones to-date. It’s quick and responsive and carries a remarkable feature load for its compact size. Connectivity is at its highest with the Nokia E71 boasting every single connectivity option, which is currently available. Add the GPS receiver and the slim metallic design and you’ve got yourself a smartphone that walks and talks high-end.
Nokia E71 however is in for some tough BlackBerry competition. The Bold 9000 seems like a nice alternative having almost the same feature pack as the Nokia. BlackBerry’s proprietary OS is not as widespread as the Symbian S60 but the business applications are all there, so the target audience won’t feel deprived. The Bold also has a screen of much higher-resolution than the E71, but then, size is worth a thought.” Read more here:

Samsung OMNIA Review at phonearena!
July 26, 2008
“The display is 3.2 inch one, which makes it comparable to the famous iPhone. Unfortunately, resolution wise, it is behind the leaders. We think that WVGA would suit it much better, compared to the 240х400 it has now. Nevertheless, the screen offers good image quality, but we have a few remarks regarding the colors, which have a light yellow hue. It is almost impossible to use it in direct sunlight, which is a big drawback. We have nothing to say about the sensitivity, even though Apple?s baby is still far ahead. Every touch is accompanied by a gentle vibration, no matter if you have activated any function and often, that could mislead you if you have tapped the wrong place. In addition, you have an extremely fashionable stylus at your disposal, which could be easily replaced by any object. The only objects on the front are two large and relatively easy to press hardware buttons (Send/End keys) and an ?optical? mouse, like in Samsung i780. When the virtual cursor is not active, it the mouse has the role of a D-pad and you have to run your finger in the direction desired. Overall, this alternative input method is good, but you’ll never feel a need to use it while operating the phone. The rest of the hardware buttons are on the right side. All of them have a decent size and are easily felt once pressed, which makes them user-friendly. On top of that, they have multiple functions. When held, the button for entering the main menu activates the Task switcher. By using the key for turning the volume up, you can switch on the zoom, no matter which menu you are in. Pressing the camera ?trigger? one time leads to the gallery. Even though it is not revolutionary, we have to congratulate Samsung for the realization of the idea. Multifunctionality is the way!” Read more here:

BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 Hands-On Hardware Review
July 26, 2008

“With the BlackBerry KickStart it seems RIM has managed to achieve a form factor that is both Small yet BIG. It’s actually a little bit weird to experience at first. Sitting on the desk next to a pile of other smartphones (a few BlackBerrys, a Treo 680 and even an iPhone 3G) with its flip closed, the KickStart “seems” small. With the exception of the Treo 680, the KickStart is definitely the thickest of the bunch, but the width and height of the device is obviously much smaller and the black face with chrome-colored edging makes it look tight. Despite the extra thickness added to the device from having a flip, the KickStart should be small enough to fit into most people’s pockets inconspicuously.” Read more here:
