Mysterious Fujitsu LifeBook Tablet PC on show in Germany
April 30, 2008
Fujitsu sneakily put out an as-yet unannounced Tablet PC during a customer presentation in Germany last week, and an eagle-eyed spotter grabbed what scant details were on offer. Using Fujitsu’s LifeBook brand, the convertible notebook has a passive touchscreen display (e.g. you can use your finger rather than a specific stylus) measuring 13.3-inches. It also uses Intel’s latest Core 2 Duo P8400, a chipset both super-compact and energy efficient.
Other than that, very little is known. The unit appears to be locked down in some sort of docking station, which would tally with Fujitsu’s confirmation that a range of matching accessories will be available. However there’s no suggestion of which market the notebook is intended for, whether it will supplement or replace existing Fujitsu Tablet PCs, or what sort of price it will carry.
It’s possible that this new LifeBook could replace the existing Fujitsu T2010, which was praised at its launch in September last year for its bright, LED-backlit screen and long battery life. However the relatively slow Core 2 Duo processor and absence of an optical drive have seen it pale against newer rivals.

Nokia is now more “beautiful to use”
April 30, 2008
Nokia unveiled three new handsets under the motto “Beautiful to use”. The Nokia 6600 fold, Nokia 6600 slide and Nokia 3600 slide combine exclusive design and materials with nice functionality.
The Nokia 6600 fold is considered the flagship of the trio at least according to Nokia. The clamshell offers a one-click electromagnetic opening mechanism with dampened hinge for smooth motion and flaunts an unusual combination of material such as the smooth back and the high-gloss front. The Nokia 6600 fold has a QVGA 2.13-inch 16M color OLED display and a 2 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash.
Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, a double tap on the Nokia 6600 slide can snooze an alert, silence or reject a call or simply wake up the hidden external 128 x 160 pixel display in order to visualize the clock. The Nokia Arte had a similar functionality but there it was limited to only displaying the clock.
In terms of network connectivity, the Nokia 6600 fold is able to offer quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus dual-band UMTS support with video calls. The device is based on the Nokia Series 40 user interface and will have support for microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 4GB.
The Nokia 6600 fold will be available in Q3 2008 in Mysterious Black and Sophisticated Purple at an estimated price of 275 euro before subsidies and taxes.
The Nokia 6600 slide builds on the same well-known name but again doesn’t offer the smartphone functionality of the original Nokia 6600. The new slider has the same double tap feature of the 6600 fold and also has some interesting materials used such as glossy surfaces and steel covers.
The Nokia 6600 slide is again based on the S40 user interface and has a QVGA 2.2-inch 16M color TFT display. In the same time it remains compact enough. The 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera is also capable of recording VGA resolution video clips at 15fps (in 3GP format). The Nokia 6600 slide also has a FM radio and some dedicated music keys.
Connectivity features include quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and dual-band UMTS with video calls, Bluetooth and a microUSB connectivity port.
The Nokia 6600 slide will be available in Q3 2008 at an estimated price of 250 euro before subsidies and taxes.
Last of the bunch, the Nokia 3600 slide also has some neat features in store for would-be owners. Its sliding body again has some high-gloss surfaces with gradated colors, metallic elements and soft ceramic paint. Beside the 2.2-inch QVGA 16M color TFT display, the 3600 slide also boasts a 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera capable of capturing VGA MPEG4 videos at 15 fps and a two-step camera ke
The Nokia 3600 slide doesn’t have the double-tap command feature but it’s the first Nokia handset to feature Background Noise Cancellation for superior sound quality. It’s got a 2.5 mm standard audio jack which serves the double purpose of a TV-out port.
Connectivity-wise, the Nokia 3600 slide packs quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support (no 3G) and Bluetooth. The microSD memory card slot is capable of using cards with a capacity of up to 4GB.
The Nokia 3600 slide will be available in Charcoal and Wine colors in Q3 2008 at an estimated retail price of 175 euro before taxes and subsidies.

Iron Man case mod shows lots of dedication, is still ugly
April 29, 2008
Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way: we can’t deny that the Iron Man Mark I case mod took some serious work (and skill). That being the case, it’d take a pretty hardcore fan of the character (or the new flick, we guess) to love this one with reckless abandon. Reportedly, the whole shebang was built in just three weeks, and while we’re still waiting for the full work log, feel free to hit the read link for an array of angles.

LaCie snags Hitachi’s 500GB 5K500, stuffs it into Rugged Hard Disk
April 29, 2008
LaCie’s bright orange Rugged Hard Disk hasn’t changed much externally since it surfaced over two years ago, but what used to buy you 160GB will now land you a full half-terabyte with dough left over for several In-N-Out runs. The latest Rugged drive packs Hitachi’s 500GB Travelstar 5K500 and still maintains the scratch-resistant aluminum shell and shock-resistant rubber bumper. As for ports, you’ll find a USB 2.0-only edition or a more versatile iteration that includes USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 sockets. Either flavor comes bundled with the company’s Setup Assistant and backup software, and if you’re tired of waiting for 1TB in your pocket, you can make do with this one for just $299.99 / $399.99 depending on your choice of interface(s).

Nearly 20% of Mid- and High-End Mobile Devices Will Run a Linux by 2013
April 28, 2008
“Linux, which has been much maligned by Symbian and Microsoft as a non-starter in the handset operating system market, is set to see strong growth as issues with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements are alleviated. The growing momentum behind the LiMo Foundation initiative, as well as the marketing boost that has been realized from the entry of Google?s Android solution has been further enhanced by Nokia?s support of the Maemo solution and its purchase of Trolltech. ABI Research believes that by 2013, nearly one out of every five mid- or high-end mobile devices will use a Linux operating system. ABI Research vice president Stuart Carlaw notes that, ?Clever choice of public license support, along with software engineering that isolates proprietary items from open source items, allows operating system vendors to generate revenue from a very cost-effective OS solution.? He goes on to add that, ?Linux OS solutions will be far more cost-effective than incumbent solutions, even when silicon requirements are taken into account, given that a fuller application layer will be included in the standard package and that the burden of customization falls mostly on the independent software vendor.? A new ABI Research study has found that Linux solutions will be at the center of the drive to bring more content-rich environments to users who currently utilize mid-tier devices. More importantly, it looks increasingly likely that mobile Linux solutions will be an important building block in enabling an application domain that embraces Web-based applications and blended Web/native applications. ” via businesswire.com

Samsung miCoach Review at phonearena!
April 27, 2008
“The sun had just risen over the horizon, a few minutes ago and was bringing a little gift of beauty and calamity to the big city. Indolently caressing every window, it was trying to remind the people of the beginning of the new day.It gently seduced the blinds of my bedroom, kissed the rectangular black box (with dimensions 4.0 x 1.8 x 0.6 inches (101.5 x 45 x 14.5 mm)), lying on my nightstand and in this very moment, it blinked. The two-inch display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels became alive and 262k colors became a part of the morning. Finally, the alarm clock of my Samsung miCoach slider, made in partnership with adidas, politely tried to push me out of the bed. I reached, took it in my hand, for a hundredth time astonished at its incredible lightness (only 2.8 оz (80 grams)) and sat in the bed, in such a way as not to let the sun light fall directly on its screen. This is one of the few things that I hate about this phone. Even at maximum brightness, the screen is unusable in broad daylight. ” Read more here:
